this is not a book Review: PS. I love You
October 24, 2008
PS. I love You….written by by Cecelia Ahern,(then 21 years old, when the book first released in Ireland, 2002).A warm, feel good, makes you laugh-makes you cry kind of story…
Its only after finishing it i looked for online book reviews, n found tht many critics were not much in praise for the ‘literature’ n ‘depth of characters’.But that wouldn make this a bad book.
Here is a gist of the story line:
Its about, Holly, an Irish widow going through grief of having lost her high school sweetheart husband, Gerry, after been married for ten years.Gerry dies of a brain tumor, Holly finds life hard and lonely after his loss. She turns to her family and best friends for support. However, Gerry, well aware that his absence would be hard on his sweetheart had written her a series of letters that prove to be his final gift to his wife.
Starting in March and ending in January, there are ten envelopes to be opened on the first day of each month in order to help her deal with his death and move on in life.!
Now add to the plot a lot of characters….Holly’s four crazy siblings-each a different charater, her two best friends, new friends, possiblity of falling in love again, and the letters written by Gerry to guide her through the grief and make fall in love with Life again.!
Now thats heart warming…if not more than ‘feel good’…where the story seems to start with ‘tragedy/grief’ mode where as the title PS ILove You making you expect some kind of cute sweet plot…
Read along and you get involved in the fun and frolic of the girls(almost into their 30’s..hehe..),moments Holly share with her family…discovering never before seen facets of her siblingsd…realising how true friends are friends indeed and finally realising that life does move on,pretty much what Gerry wanted her to realise.
All these written in a readable, simple language and in good flow as time moves on for ten months as each letter from Gerry is read. Now the book has been adapted into a movie-thats what you see on the book cover!
Well am not too keen on watching the movie version, but i’d guess it would be good even though they may trim the script a bit.
